Getting Here

Ferry & getting around

How to get to the island with a dog in tow — and how to move around once you're here.

Getting to the island

Steamship Authority

Hyannis → Nantucket

On leash
Crossing
~2h 15m
Brings cars
Yes
Dogs
Car deck / outside
Cabin
Not allowed

Dogs ride on the car deck or outdoor seating areas, on leash — not in the passenger cabin. Plan to stay with your pup the whole way.

Reservations required in summer — car spots especially sell out months ahead. Arrive 30 min early to walk your dog dockside before boarding.

Hy-Line Cruises

Hyannis → Nantucket

On leash
Crossing
~1h (fast)
Brings cars
No
Dogs
Outer deck only
Cabin
Not allowed

Faster crossing, but you'll be outside the whole way. Good option if your dog handles a quick, breezy ride better than a long one.

If your dog is prone to seasickness, the longer/steadier Steamship is usually the gentler ride. Skip a heavy meal an hour before either crossing.

Getting around the island

Taxis

Most local taxis will take dogs. Confirm when you book.

Uber & Lyft

Limited on Nantucket — don't plan around them.

Bikes

Cliff Lodge has a bike rack. Dogs ride in a front basket or trailer (bring your own). Miles of dedicated paths.

Walking

Cliff Lodge is about 10 minutes on foot from the ferry and most of downtown.

Both ferry lines update their pet policies from time to time. Confirm the current rules with each carrier before you book.
